Walmart receipts use 9 single-letter tax codes (D, J, E, N, X, O, T, P, R) and a 20-digit Transaction Code (TC#) printed at the bottom for returns and lookups. Each line item shows the product name, UPC code, price, and tax code. The receipt header includes the store number (ST#), terminal (TE#), cashier ID (OP#), and the store address.
Walmart operates 4,700+ stores across the United States plus over 600 Sam's Club warehouses. Founded by Sam Walton in 1962 in Rogers, Arkansas, it became the world's largest retailer by 1990 and the largest private employer (2.3M workers) by 2020. Walmart's receipt format has stayed remarkably consistent for decades โ the tax code system and TC# format you see today look almost identical to receipts from the 1990s.
